VA Lottery And Washington Redskins Exemplify Gambling And NFL Mix

The Washington Redskins have one of the youngest owners in the league and perhaps that is why the team has thrown caution to the wind and is helping promote gambling in Virginia. The Virginia Lottery and the Redskins have partnered once again to offer more gambling choices for Va. residents.

Gambling is supposed to be a taboo subject for the NFL fraternity. Ask any NFL executive about gambling on their sport, and they are likely to give a five minute dissertation of how the league looks down upon gambling on NFL games.

The owners, however, started having a different take on the issue a couple of years ago. Owners changed their rules to allow themselves the opportunity to partner with state lotteries around the country and offer scratch off gambling lottery tickets with team logos on them.

The Redskins Legacy tickets that have been unveiled for this football season show just how far the teams will go to promote gambling. One of the prizes that can be won the scratch off ticket is luxury suite tickets and tickets to Redskins away games. The only way to win these tickets is to spend money gambling, something the NFL has denounced for decades.

NBA Commissioner David Stern made comments last year that suggested his league would be willing to look into the possibility of endorsing gambling on their sport. Stern did not say that time would come anytime soon, but acknowledged that gambling has become more accepted in recent years.

Sports betting has become a billion dollar industry and it is largely driven by the NFL and college football. The NFL has denied the connection between gambling and the sports popularity, but many experts draw a direct correlation between the increased gambling and the increased popularity of football in the US.
